Optimal Planning of Reliable Microgrids

Contact: Prof. Giovanni Sansavini

To ensure optimal placement and sizing of distributed energy resources (DER) to minimise cost and to maximise reliability in terms of uninterrupted supply to the microgrid customers, we stochastically model islanding (faults outside the microgrid) and line outages (faults within the microgrid) and minimise their impact. As different classes of customers (residential, industrial, commercial) value continuity of service differently, different levels of reliability are offered to each customer class, placing DER close to high-priority loads and interrupting low-priority loads first during an outage.
